Forget brunch. Celebrate Mother's Day this weekend by getting Mom outside.

There are several great events and activities happening in parks along the St. Croix River this weekend, an easy drive from the Twin Cities and perfect for a day trip.

Consider combining a visit to a park with a stop at one of the rural pottery studios in the St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour, happening all weekend. The 21st year of this tour will feature 42 potters at seven host studios.

1. Friday: Sing along with spring

What Mom doesn't want some peace and quiet? Head to Interstate State Park on the St. Croix on Friday night to join a park naturalist for a one-hour, one-mile walk to take in the sounds of spring, including birds and frogs.

Maybe you're giving Mom a new camera this year so she can preserve all your family's memories. She might want to take pictures of someone besides you at some point, though. A digital photography workshop at Afton State Park will give her the knowledge she needs.
