Roseau County. 22 miles southeast of Roseau; park entrance is off of County 4, about 7 miles east of Highway 89.

Highway map index: E-4.

Hayes Lakes State Park straddles opposite environments. To the east spread hundreds of square miles of wild lands in the Beltrami Island State Forest; to the west stretch vast flatlands that used to be grassland and savanna. The park's highlight is Hayes Lake, formed by a dam on the north fork of the Roseau River. Fishing on the lake and below the dam can be good for northern, walleye and crappie, but most people come to Hayes Lake to swim. There aren't many lakes in the area, so visitors like to make a day of picnicking, sunbathing and swimming at the beach.
