Two new camper cabins, heated and wired with electricity, have opened at Afton State Park near a bluff overlooking the St. Croix River.   The White Pine and Bur Oak cabins are located by the park’s group campsite.   by T.W. Budig, ECM Capitol reporter   Gov. Tim Pawlenty believes it will be one of the most spectacular state parks in the United States. Pawlenty announced the State of Minnesota and U.S. Steel had reached an agreement on the sale of 3,000 acres of land on the eastern shore of Lake Vermilion for a new state park.
  When the winter months arrive, many people go into a long hibernation. But for those who would like a little adventure outside, Minnesota’s State Parks still offer some scenic winter options, such as snowshoeing and cross country skiing.   Just a half-hour drive away from downtown St. Paul, Afton State Park has all the woods, trails and solitude that you would find by driving way up north.   
Minnesota state parks and state trails will host 30 candlelight events this winter, including a New Year's Eve walk-and-skate at Fort Snelling State Park. The Minnesota DNR says the family-friendly events provide an opportunity to ski, snowshoe or hike through woods and prairies on trails illuminated by the warm glow of candles.
