By John Myers, Duluth News Tribune Gov. Mark Dayton’s first draft of a state construction bonding bill includes $4.5 million for the first phase of construction at the new Lake Vermilion State Park but little else new for Northeastern Minnesota.
The new State and Regional Parks and Trails Legacy Plan is out for citizen comment and beginning Thursday, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will conduct public meetings around the state.
New state parks don’t come in a box. If they did, the new Lake Vermilion State Park would come in a large puzzle box with thousands of pieces.
Ely is a long way from just about everywhere. But, when it comes to the Internet Super Highway, Ely is in the center of the action.

Diana Doyle doesn't log high-speed miles on her bicycle.  Biking with Julian Sellers would also disappointment to serious speedsters.             If you bike with these members of Audubon Society, crank your seat down to allow for many stops, bring your binoculars and don't talk too much because they will be listening to bird songs.
Construction is moving along on the first 22 miles of the single-track mountain bike trails at Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area near Crosby and they hope to be done by mid-October.

Diana Doyle of St. Paul biked and hiked the William O'Brien State Park last week a bit before sunrise to late morning where she reports seeing 68 species of birds.
