Bike 150 years of MN History This Summer
Join 150 bicyclists, pedal 150 miles, and commemorate the 150 year anniversary of the US Dakota War of 1862.
This ONE WAY ride will meander through the scenic Minnesota River Valley with an itinerary that allows you to see it in a whole new way! Imagine pedaling backwards 150 years in MN history through historic battlefields, forts, villages and towns that are part of our often forgotten past. Names you may have heard; Ramsey, Flandrau, Sibley, Chief Wabasha, Chief Mankato, Prescott, and Chief Little Crow, but not the stories.
Did you know? Chief Little Crow lived his life in both worlds. Present at the treaty signings in 1851, Little Crow visited President Buchanan in Washington, replaced his native clothing with trousers and jacket, joined the Episcopal Church, and took up farming. Although not totally in support of the war, Little Crow agreed to lead the tribes through the conflict because of pressure when many treaty promises were broken.
Did you know? The Minnesota River came to be when ice age era Lake Agassiz, blocked by a glacial ice sheet, overflowed and created a catastrophic flow of water that very quickly created the 370 mile river.
1862 will slowly unfold throughout your three days as local historians and experts greet you and share the facts and unbiased account as you set foot on each location.
This all-inclusive trek begins in St. Peter where you will park your car, load your bicycle, and enjoy a motor coach ride to Montevideo. Here you will be welcomed by the city with a BBQ and the first of many historical perspectives as we visit Camp Release. After dinner, the bus will drop you and your bike at a Granite Fall's hotel for a good night's sleep to begin your 3 day journey. The route will bring you past; Upper Sioux Agency, Wood Lake Battlefield, Birch Coulee Battlefield, Lower Sioux Agency, Redwood Ferry Crossing, Fort Ridgely, New Ulm Battle History Tour, Camp Lincoln, Winter Warrior, Reconciliation Park, and Traverse de Sioux Treaty Site. You will hotel overnight in Redwood Falls and New Ulm and complete your ride on Sunday afternoon which includes entrance to Mankato's 15th Annual Ribfest.
You will never see Minnesota the same way again!
