Trails Q&A: Sandstone Ice Fest

Name: Laura Ostergren

Hometown: Monument, CO

Occupations: Student at Iowa State

Seen: Ice-climbing at Sandstone Ice Fest 4

How did you get started ice (rock) climbing: I love ice-climbing. I tried it last year with my uncle and just fell in love with the sport. Next we’re going to try an ice over silo event that I’m really looking forward to!

Gear: I have Grivel crampons, a Black Diamond helmet and Black Diamond Fusion ice tools, but I’ve noticed the new favorite ice tools this year are the No Mics.

What are some of your favorite climbing areas: For rock climbing I love Vedauwoo, Wyoming, and for ice-climbing, Ouray, Colorado. But I’m also having a lot of fun here, too.

Trail Treats: A block of cheese. I know it sounds weird, but I just love cheese – any kind of cheese. Oh, and bacon. Ya gotta have bacon for breakfast!

What advice can you give those wanting to try ice-climbing:

Go for it! You gotta start somewhere. The best advice is to take a clinic, and just go for it.
