Trails Q&A: Great River Road

Name: Dawn & Gary Lawrence

Home: Pelican Rapids

Seen: Along the Great River Road, roadside park, across the bridge from Jacobson, MN

Gear: A well-filled picnic

basket and our dog, Dustar

What do you like about this spot: We stop here regularly - about three or four times a year - when we’re going to visit family in Hoyt Lakes. It’s a beautiful spot for a picnic and it’s past the halfway point on our trip, with a gas station just down the road. Every time we stop, the Mississippi river is different. This time it’s up quite a lot. Plus, it’s always quiet and it’s a great place to stretch our legs and walk the dog.

What advice do you have for Minnesota tourists: Get out and enjoy your wonderful state! It’s such a nice drive from Pelican Rapids to Hoyt Lakes - through Detroit Lakes, Park Rapids, Nevis, Akeley, Walker, Remer and Jacobson, then up through the Range Cities. You can go from prairie to pine forests and still be close to home.

What Minnesota trails did you drive by on your trip: Well, let’s see - there’s the Ottertrail, the Lake Country Scenic Byway, the Heartland Trail, the Paul Bunyan Trail, the North Country Trail, the Great River Road, and the Mesabi Trail. Did we miss anything?
