Experimenting with Physics

Soudan Underground Mine is home to the leading underground science and engineering laboratory in the United States run by the University of Minnesota.

Currently there are two major experiments being conducted in the laboratory: Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) and Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS). By building a lab at the bottom of the mine, scientists are able to use the depth as a shield to filter out very sensitive energy detectors from cosmic rays. These cosmic rays deposit tiny flashes of energy into matter that they traverse.

Get your lab coat ready - you don’t want to miss the massive MINOS detector on your tour of Soudan Underground Mine.
